Our Top Tips for Preparing your Static Caravan for Winter

As the winter season approaches, it’s essential to start preparing your static caravan for the colder months ahead. Ensuring that your caravan is winter-ready will not only help you avoid any unexpected issues but will also put your mind at rest during the closed season. From protecting your caravan from the harsh winter weather to ensuring that your plumbing is properly winterised, here are our top tips for preparing your static caravan on-site for the winter.

Clean Everywhere

To prepare your static caravan for the winter season, it’s essential to give it a thorough clean. Make sure to remove all bedding and food items. Don’t forget to clean every nook and cranny to prevent a build-up of mould. It’s also crucial to remove all valuable items, such as electronics, from your caravan and take them home with you to prevent theft. This will give you peace of mind knowing that your belongings are safe.

If you have any outdoor furniture or equipment, like a barbecue stand or garden tools, it’s best to clear them away as well. This will prevent them from being damaged by the harsh winter weather and also reduce the possibility of accidents caused by slipping on wet or icy surfaces.

Lock Windows and Doors

Make sure you air out your holiday home regularly to prevent any stale or musty smells from developing. Open the windows and let in some fresh air one last time to keep your caravan smelling fresh before you leave. Once you’re ready to leave, check all the windows and make sure they’re properly sealed.

Trap Moisture

During the winter season, it is common for moisture to accumulate in caravans, which can lead to the growth of mould and mildew; therefore, it’s important to keep your caravan dry. This can be prevented by placing dehumidifiers around the caravan to absorb excess moisture from the air. By taking these steps, you can help protect your caravan from the damaging effects of excess moisture and ensure that it remains a comfortable and safe living space all year round.

Drain Down Your Static Caravan

To prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting, you’ll need to drain down your caravan’s water system. This involves turning off the water supply and opening all the taps to allow the water to drain out. You’ll also need to flush the toilet and pour antifreeze down the drains to prevent any remaining water from freezing.

At our static caravan site near the Lake District, we provide a comprehensive “drain-down” service to ensure the safety of your static caravan during winter. Our service involves disconnecting the pipework under the caravan, blowing compressed air through the entire system to remove any water left in the pipes, removing water from the toilets, and completely removing shower valves. We offer this service three times a year, at the start of November, December, and January, before the park closes.

We also send out a letter every autumn to guide you on how to protect your holiday home during winter. We also offer free central heating antifreeze checks to ensure your central heating is adequately protected during the winter months. Rest assured if you own one of our static caravans in our Lancashire site that we take every measure to keep your caravan safe and protected during the winter season.

Leave Gas and Electricity On

One of the most important tasks is keeping the gas and electric supply turned on to the caravan. This is because modern central heating boilers have automatic frost protection systems built in that prevent frost damage when the water temperature drops below a certain level. If the gas and electric supply is turned off, the frost protection system won’t work, and your caravan could be at risk of damage caused by freezing temperatures.
