A Day Out at Williamson Park

Williamson Park

Williamson Park is an excellently kept fifty-four-acre parkland with beautiful forest trails. This stunning parkland is a twenty-minute drive from our holiday home park in Carnforth, making it the perfect destination for a memorable day out.

Williamson Park was originally built for the Williamson clan in the 1870s, however, ten years later these expansive acres were eventually entrusted to the people of Lancaster. Nowadays, the expansive grounds have plenty for the whole family to enjoy, including play areas for children, picnic areas, The Pavilion Café and Shop, a butterfly house, a mini zoo, and the famous Ashton Memorial.

Ashton memorial

The Ashton Memorial

The Ashton Memorial is arguably one of the most iconic buildings in all of Lancaster. The memorial was commissioned by Lord Ashton for his late wife Jessy and is an exceptional piece of architecture. The building now is a popular site for weddings in Lancaster, and it’s easy to see why. With alluring sculptures and allegorical paintings, accompanied by stunning tiling and chandeliers, it certainly exudes romance. The Ashton Memorial provides an excellent viewing spot from the first floor of the park, the countryside, and the surrounding mountains.

The Butterfly House

The Butterfly House is an incredible attraction within Williamson Park. Once a former Victorian greenhouse, the building is now home to a wide variety of butterflies and tropical plants. Guests are invited to wander between the foliage and to spot as many species of butterflies as possible. This house is home to some of the world’s most beautiful species of butterfly, including the rare emerald swallowtail, the blue morpho and the owl butterfly with its unusual markings. You can either walk around the house in your own time, or participate in a guided butterfly tour during the weekend. The Butterfly House is an excellent place to visit if you love insects and is a great place for photo opportunities.

Mini Zoo

Children and animal lovers alike will love wandering around Williamson Park’s mini zoo. The zoo is home to a mob of meerkats (that’s a family to you and me), guinea pigs, rabbits, marmosets, frogs, fish, birds, giant snails and so much more. Every weekend there is an interactive experience available. Led by the expert zookeeper, you may have the chance to feed, pet and learn so much more about these rescued animals.

The Pavilion Café & Shop

If you forgot to bring a picnic with you, don’t worry, Williamson Park has a superb Pavilion Café and shop on-site. The café creates excellent breakfasts and lunches using local produce. These meals and snacks are suitable for everyone with a variety of choices including children’s meals and vegan options. The Pavilion also stocks a range of local wines, ciders, ales and beers for you to enjoy.
