A leading English art critic, as well as a social thinker and philanthropist, this major character in the Victorian era collected a bounty of paintings and personal possessions that are all on display today. Set in a 250-acre woodland estate and with eight gardens to explore, this is a truly relaxing day out.

2. Stott Park Bobbin Mill

This little hidden gem may be compact, but there is so much to see and do. From informative signage to dressing up clothes and entertainment for the little ones, you’ll be able to see what life was like for the workers when the site was a fully operating bobbin mill. There is a guided tour for those who want to find out all the secrets, as well as demonstrations and insights into the industrial revolution.

3. Lakes Aquarium

At the very southern tip of Lake Windermere you’ll find the Lakes Aquarium. An idea day out for kids, you’ll be able to take a trip under the waves and see a wide selection of native marine and freshwater fish including Arctic char, seahorses, Asian short-clawed otters and even clownfish.

There’s a café and gift shop too, so you’ll be able to browse for the whole day.

4. Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top

The former home of much-adored children’s author, Beatrix Potter, Hill Top definitely has a touch of magic in the air. Brimming with artefacts and treasures that she loved, the house has been kept in pristine condition to allow visitors to see why she enjoyed her time there so much.

The surrounding countryside was inspiration for many of her stories, so a wander in the woods to spot Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Peter Rabbit is a must.

5. Blackwell Arts & Crafts House

Slow the pace right down with a lazy day at Blackwell House. Whether you’re immersing yourself in the beauty of the area, or warming your toes by the fireplace, this stunning house has plenty of places to sit and take a few moments to yourself. With lots of its original decorative features, the house is packed with hand-crafted artefacts including tiles by designer William de Morgan and panelling by Simpsons of Kendal.

6. Holker Hall & Gardens

Visitors of all ages are more than welcome at Holker Hall. The home of the Cavendish family, it sits only a short distance from Grange-over-Sands and Morecombe Bay and the doors have been opened for all to explore.

Framed by the Lakeland Hills, the gardens are great for pottering and there are events through the year, including a quaint Christmas market. Make sure you take the guided tour and sample the scones and flapjacks at the on-site café.

7. Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway

Steam enthusiasts will not be disappointed with a trip to Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway! The hardworking steam locomotives pull their beautiful carriages through the wide expanse of the Lake District countryside and over the steeply graded Furness Railway Branch Line.

The station itself is also worth a browse and there are special events through the year that children will enjoy. Ticket prices are combined with the boat tickets, so be sure to make the most of your day out.

A firm favourite with Lake District visitors, the Windemere Lake Cruise gives you a chance to see the area from a different point of view.

Set on England’s largest lake, the steamers sail each day to give everyone the chance to see attractions such as Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway and the Lakes Aquarium. There’s pleasant commentary along the way to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

10. Dove Cottage & The Wordsworth Museum

One of Britain’s best loved poets, William Wordsworth has a strong connection to the magnificence of the Lake District which is why he used his time there to draw inspiration for some of his pieces.

Visitors to Dove Cottage can take a guided tour through the house and his life, even stepping outside to see the gardens that Wordsworth and his sister designed and planted. The estate is wonderfully kept to preserve the history and there are changing exhibitions throughout the year too.
